The classical diagnosis of a viral or bacterial infection is made based on the medical history, clinical findings and evidence of antibodies to pathogen-specific antigens (ELISA, Western Blot). The serological diagnostic laboratory tests may be complemented and refined by sensitive immunological functional tests.
